THE family of a man who died following a crash have described how “he was the centre of a very close family and was loved dearly by his family, friends and colleagues.”

Gary Matthews, known as Stan ‘the man’ Vegas, from Burry Port, was involved in a collision in Burry Port on March 15.

At the time, police said a pedestrian was fatally hit on Ashburnham Road, Burry Port, near Sea View Terrace at around 10.50pm on Friday, March 15.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the car involved was a silver Volvo V40 and have now named the man who died. Mr Matthews was originally from Manchester and was a member of punk band V2, formed in the 1970s.

His family has released a tribute with the help of the police force, and particularly wanted to thank people who tried to help on the night of the crash.

A statement from his family said: “It is with deepest regret that the family wish to announce the tragic passing of ‘Stan’ (Gary Matthews). Stan was a man in his prime and full of life, still leading in a punk band; V2. He was the centre of a very close family and was loved dearly by his family, friends and colleagues.

“He is now and will always be sorely missed and will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity. Originally from Manchester he travelled the world with his career.”

The family also thanked friends and community for their show of support adding: “We offer their deepest thanks to the many who were there on the Friday night and tried in vain to send him home to us. In line with the police investigation, we respectfully ask if anyone has information or footage that will help the police, they share this, so we can try as a family to move forward.”
