IT IS nearly time to pound the pavement and get a spring in your step as the Loughborough Half Marathon is only a few weeks away, and more than 700 runners have already signed up.

The half marathon is in its sixth year and on Sunday, April 2, runners are invited to take part in the event that supports domestic abuse charity Living Without Abuse (LWA).

Event organiser Gina King told the Echo that so far they have nine registered teams, including five from Poplar Running Club.

So far the registered teams are Baton Birds, We thought they said Rum!, Datcom, Top of the pops, Pops Misfits, Pop along, Once you pop you just cant stop, Pest and Soar Valley Stars.

The Poplar Cycling Club are also supporting the run as they are the lead and end cyclists for the event.

This year’s race, sponsored by Duncan and Toplis and Straw and Pearce Loughborough, will see runners tackling a 13.1 mile course that starts and finishes at Charnwood College, in Thorpe Hill.

Gina King said: “We have 700 runners taking place so far but that means that there is still space for nearly another 300 runners and there is still time to get practicing and get yourself registered.

“This race means a lot to LWA and we are hoping that this year is just as good as those in the past.”

LWA, formerly known as Loughborough Women’s Aid, supports men and women experiencing domestic abuse across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The entry fee for the half marathon is £25 for unaffiliated runners and £23 if you are affiliated to a running club. Team entry is a fee of £70 per team of four, and registration closes at midnight on Wednesday, March 29.

To enter the marathon register online at www. loughboroughhalf.co.uk or email gina@lwa.org.uk for an entry form, and anyone interested in volunteering contact Gina on 01509 550317 or gina@lwa.org.uk
