MORE than 530 crimes - including nearly 100 burglaries - were reported in Loughborough in December 2016, figures have revealed.

The statistics, published on the police.uk website, show the highest concentration of reported offences to be in the Loughborough Central ward, which covers much of the town centre, both the university and college campuses, and the Ashby Road estates.

In December 2016, which is the most recent data available, the Loughborough Central ward was hit by 271 offences including 51 burglaries, 31 incidents of anti-social behaviour, 33 cases of shoplifting, and 60 ‘violence and sexual offences’ which can include common assaults and grievous bodily harm.

Burglary was the biggest issue in the Loughborough South ward, which covers the Nanpantan, Shelthorpe, Forest Road and Woodthorpe areas of town, with 32 incidents reported to police.

And in Loughborough East, which covers areas including Derby Road, Belton Road and Meadow Lane, ‘violence and sexual offences’ was the biggest cause of concern with 32 reported incidents, followed by 20 cases of anti-social behaviour and 16 vehicle crime offences.

In the villages, Sileby was one of those hit heaviest, with 39 crimes reported in December.

These included 14 incidents of anti-social behaviour, 11 cases of ‘violence and sexual offences’ and five vehicle crimes.

Quorn’s most reported crime was shoplifting, with eight incidents taking place, while in Castle Donington, 10 of the 30 crimes reported to police were for anti-social behav- iour.

In Mountsorrel, 37 crimes were reported to police during December.

These included nine counts of anti-social behaviour, eight incidents of ‘violence and sexual offences’, six burglaries, and four cases of criminal damage and/or arson.

Birstall was hit by 59 reported crimes in December, but this figure had dropped dramatically from the previous month when 98 crimes took place.

The town’s biggest problem in the lead up to Christmas was anti-social behaviour, with 14 reported, followed by 10 burglaries and nine cases of vehicle crime.

And at East Midlands Airport, nine crimes were reported in the last month of 2016.

These included three cases of ‘violence and sexual offences’ and two vehicle crimes, as well as one incident each of possession of a weapon, shoplifting, public order offence, and anti-social behaviour.
