MP praises Uni’ after the best in the world award
LOUGHBOROUGH MP Nicky Morgan has congratulated the “amazing” work of Loughborough University as it was named the best sporting university in the world in the global QS higher education league table.
It is the first time the annual QS World University Rankings by Subject, released on Wednesday, March 8, have included a list of the world’s best places to study sports-related subjects.
Mrs Morgan said: “I would like to say a huge congratulations to everyone involved with Loughborough sport, both at the University and Charnwood College.
“It is an amazing achievement, I am not surprised by it, but I am delighted because I know how hard the students and staff work, and I know that the work both the university and college are carrying out is helping to put Loughborough on both a national and international stage.
“It confirms Loughborough’s place in the world of sport and it proves it is right at the very top.
“I think that it will definitely open up even more opportunities for both the university and the college, and even more students may look at the university, but I think that more elite teams and athletes will look at using the facilities at Loughborough and it will only mean good things for the future.”
Loughborough ranked joint-first with the University of Sydney, Australia.
The new sport ranking is based on surveying academic staff that declare a speciality in the subject, and employers who seek to employ graduates that specialize in the discipline.
It is also based on research output and impact, with both citations and paper output measured over a fiveyear period.
Over the years Loughborough University has produced wellknown sporting alumni such as Lord Sebastian Coe, Paula Radcliffe, Tanni Grey-Thompson, and numerous Olympic, world, and European gold medal winning athletes.
Professor Mark Lewis, Dean of Loughborough’s School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, said: “It is fantastic to see our university’s expertise in this area recognised on a global stage. To be named ‘best in the world’ is testament to the high quality research we undertake and the high calibre of graduates we produce.”
