Festival celebrates the best of sci-fi film music
WHAT would great movies be without their evocative soundtracks? From the heroic blaze of trumpets in the opening titles of Star Wars to the stabbing strings of Hitchcock’s Psycho, composers’ scores can set the scene as vividly as any well-framed shot.
The SOUNDSTAGE festival weekend in Nottingham from Friday to Tuesday, March 24-28, will give audiences the chance to immerse themselves in the very best of Sci-Fi film music. Highlights include a blockbuster evening from the world renowned Hallé Orchestra, a screening of cult movie Under the Skin with live soundtrack from the London Sinfonietta, an immersive exploration of silent film sound accompaniments including Fritz Lang’s masterpiece Metropolis and the chance for musical families to make and perform a soundtrack to the earliest Sci-Fi movie, Le voyage dans la lune. There’s also some great family entertainment with Back to the Future and some free Soundstage fringe events at Jam Café and The Lofthouse.
Neil Bennison, music programme manager at the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall, said: “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to give Nottingham a bit of cinematic and musical magic, wrapped up in a weekend that has something for everyone. A festival like this depends on having strong partnerships with some can-do arts organisations and we’re really indebted to Broadway, the University of Nottingham, and Farmyard Records, for making this happen. It’s also great to involve three orchestras who now regularly visit Nottingham, each of whom will make a unique contribution to the festival buzz. It should be a blast!”
