It is clear that the A512 will not be able to cope
THOUGH extra investment to improve roads around Shepshed and the A512 (Echo, March 15) is welcome, this will still not prevent gridlock on Ashby Road and within our town.
As well as over 5,000 houses on Garendon and in Shepshed, there are plans for a huge incinerator near J23 which will generate hundreds of HGV journeys and business traffic.
There’s also a recycling enterprise and an expanding Truck Stop accessing the same short stretch of road.
Add traffic servicing the 4,000 job Enterprise Zone, it’s clear the A512 will be unable to cope. You can’t put a quart into a pint pot!
Improvement of roads within Shepshed has not been addressed at all. There are already many ‘pinch points’ and dangerous junctions, which can only get worse as more and more houses are built.
Perhaps the most worrying aspect, however, is the inescapable deterioration in air quality.
J23 is the second most polluted area in the whole of Loughborough, close to the limit of European air quality standards. Clearly, the increases in traffic (particularly the diesel HGV’s) will take us over that limit. Added to that are emissions from the incinerator.
This is totally unacceptable to Shepshed residents.
