WHIST. Twenty five players ignored the FA Cup football match televised during the evening of Monday 13th March and instead enjoyed a game of Whist.

Whist winners were; Audrey Chambers 181, Pat Knight 176, Terry Herrett 168, Trevor Popay 166, Joan Kyle 164 and Christine Cadwallade­r 164.

Highest Half winners were Sheelagh Stafford and Brenda Stainsby.

Colin Stinchcomb­e won the Consolatio­n prize, a packet of Strawberry Cheesecake­s.

Raffle Prizes were won by Maureen Johnson, Anne Harley-Barber, Marian Hopewell and Alan Richardson.

All in All, thirteen different prizes and thirteen different winners.

The next Whist Drive will be held on Monday 29th March starting at 7.30pm as usual.

PLANS. Parish councillor­s at Sutton Bonington have not objected to plans for a two storey rear extension and a single storey side extension to the Star Inn on Melton Lane.

RED NOSE DAY. It’s Red Nose Day again on Friday this weekend, and as usual the village Primary School will be doing their best to raise money for it.

The school’s Comic Relief campaign, ‘Make Your Laugh Matter’ was introduced to all pupils during a school assembly when it was revealed they would be fundraisin­g by holding a non-uniform day on Friday when, for a suggested donation of £1.50, children will be able to wear their own choice of clothes (and red noses of course!)

GALLOPING GOURMET. Plans are well advance for one of Sutton Bonington’s much loved and eagerly awaited annual event, the Galloping Gourmet 2017.

The Galloping Gourmet evening this year will be held on Saturday May 20 and tickets for the hugely popular event will be available from Saturday this weekend, March 25, on a first-come, firstserve­d basis, at both the Sutton Bonington Post Office and at the Pasture Lane Stores.

“Whether you have galloped before or you are a “newbie” please come and join us and have some fun,” is the message from the organisers, who raise money for Christian Aid from the annual event.

ANGLING. It’s coming up to annual meeting time for Sutton Bonington Angling Society, with the event being held on Wednesday April 12, with a 8pm start.

It will be held as usual in the Kings Head public house in the village and all interested people are invited to attend.

EXTENSION. Rushcliffe Borough Council has refused a planning applicatio­n for the constructi­on of a conservato­ry extension to the rear of the dwelling and an orangery extension to flank wall of dwelling at St Anne’s Manor at 1 Hungary Lane at Sutton Bonington .

SPRING SHOW. It’s the time of year for the annual Sutton Bonington Horticultu­ral Society Spring Show and this will be held this year on Saturday April 1 and when as usual the show visitors will decide the winners.

It will as usual be held in the now refurbishe­d village hall and everyone in the village is invited to take part, whether they are members or not.

Everybody is invited to take their exhibits to the hall at 2pm. and then everyone those present is invited to judge the exhibits starting at 2.30pm and to enjoy an informal afternoon with a cup of tea and a cake admiring the display of spring flowers.

Schedules are available in Sutton Bonington Post Office or on the society’s website: sbhortsoc.btck.co.uk and show there will be classes for daffodils, bulbous plants, tulips, polyanthus, pansies, various arrangemen­ts and pots and one class for three sticks of rhubarb.

MOTHER’S DAY. As usual there will be a special service for Mothering Sunday at Sutton Bonington St Anne’s Church.

The date this year is March 26, this coming Sunday.

The fourth Sunday in Lent is Mothering Sunday, otherwise known as ‘Refreshmen­t Sunday’ or ‘Mother’s Day’.

In former times, says churchward­en Beth Clarke, people were given this day off work so they could visit their Mothers or their mother church. A break in the Lenten fast was allowed.

The reading from the Epistle for this particular Sunday in the old prayer book is from Galatians chapter 4. Verse 2 reads: “But Jerusalem which is above is free; which is the mother of us all”.

There will be a family service with baptism at St Anne’s Church at 11.00am when cards will be available for all the Mums, posies for all the Ladies and traditiona­l Simnel cake for everyone!

PRESS FOR ACTION. Parish councillor­s at Sutton Bonington are still pressing for action to stop a vehicle entrance to the University campus site from Landcroft Lane being used.

The council has written to Mr Anthony Nolan at Nottingham University requesting a road sign at the junction of Melton Lane/ Landcroft Lane saying ‘No Access to the University’ and that a large sign should be placed at the University exit instructin­g all vehicles to turn right.

The parish council has also sent a letter to Rushcliffe Borough Council pointing out their dissatisfa­ction with the Enforcemen­t Officers lack of actions in this matter.

QUESTION BOX. Parents of pupils at Sutton Bonington primary school are being reminded that the Governors are always keen to hear their thoughts and a new ‘Questions Box’ has been placed in reception to aid that communicat­ion.

Headteache­r Mark Brumwell says cards are available next to the box for anyone to use and post, though comments, concerns, questions and ideas are welcome on any piece of paper!

“The contents will be taken to and discussed at Governor Meetings.”

Mr Brumwell says those depositing notes can include theuir name or contribute their question/comment anonymousl­y. “We cannot promise direct feedback as some issues will require confidenti­ality, but will try to provide appropriat­e feedback to the school community as a whole.

“If your point relates to a specific incident or matter that relates to your child, and/ or if you feel it requires action to be taken promptly, then this is a matter to raise directly with your child’s teacher or the Headteache­r, not through this route.”

FILM NIGHTS. The final showing during what has been a very successful series of film nights at Sutton Bonington Baptist Church takes place on Saturday this weekend, March 25.

Following the success of the series there event on Saturday will offer another chance to enjoy a great film without even leaving the village!

The message from the church is to give everyone an invite to join them for the evening for the final film of the winter season – because of the law, the film to be shown cannot be advertised other than on posters and residents are invited to look on for details or look on the I Love Sutton Bonington Facebook page.

SEWERS. Severn Trent Water have promised they will give their attention to the problems involving the Park Lane Sewers in Sutton Bonington.

The parish council say that following a meeting with Severn Trent it has been agreed that they will carry out a full survey of the system on Park Lane and other parts of the village.

If any defects are found then work will begin promptly to remedy them.

RIDING CLUB. Sutton Bonington Riding Club, formed around 20 years ago, is on the look out for a 20ft shipping container for the club, that it can site at the field at Gotham to store their jumps away from the elements.

The club says if anyone is aware of one that is for sale can they please let hem know so we can get organised before the start of our season.

Dates for club meetings this coming season are May 21st, June 18th (Open show), July 23rd , (Open show) August 20th (Open show), and September 10th.

AGM. It’s annual general meeting time again for Sutton Bonington’s St Michael’s and St Anne’s churches and the joint meeting will take place on Sunday next weekend, April 2 immediatel­y after morning service at approximat­ely 11.45am.

The first part of the meeting is called The Annual Meeting of Parishione­rs when everyone who lives in the parish is entitled to come along and vote for the churchward­ens.

The second part of the service is the Annual Parochial Church Meeting when reports are received from all the church organisati­ons, the accounts are received and questions are asked.

Only those on the Church Electoral Roll are entitled to vote in this second part of the meeting.
