Unicorn Avocets only manage to draw with club rivals to end bid for Division One title

-

UNICORN AVOCETS saw their outside chance of overhauling Students A to lift the Loughborough and District Table Tennis League disappear at the hands of their club mates.

A hard fought 3-3 draw with Unicorn Bitterns means they can only get within a minimum of eight points of the leaders if they gain full points from their match in hand.

Peter Haluska was in good form as he won a double for Avocets but both John Genevese and Jianglang Guo got the better of Bo Zhang, the latter in five games.

The Bitterns pair also won the second doubles in five games to claim a fine draw.

Also in the top flight, a double from James Barker steered Students B towards a 4-2 success over Students C who have been resigned to bottom place for some time.

The Second Division title has long since been in the hands of Draycott Devils but there is still plenty of interest elsewhere.

Draycott Dynamos improved their chances of finishing runners up – and claiming a promotion place – as they defeated Charnwood Aggressors 5-1. Viv Rayson was the man of the match with two wins, supported by Malcolm Allsop who won one. Arthur Tomkinson won the sole point for Aggressors.

Hugglescote Hornets kept in touch with a 4-2 victory over Students D, mainly thanks to Clive Stretton who once again remained unbeaten.

Students D remain in a tense battle with Charnwood Blockers to avoid the wooden spoon with both sides locked on 25 points with only two matches remaining.
