Talk on Snowdon

-

THE latest monthly meeting of the Loughborough Welsh Society saw members and friends given a presentation on Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales and second only to Ben Nevis (Scotland) in the UK.

Snowdon is one of the main attractions in Wales, and is visited by hundreds of people over the year. It attracts dedicated climbers & walkers, as well as those who consider a walk up Snowdon as a hardy way to spend a day out.

Apart from actual climbing sections, there are various trails available to walkers in a degree of difficulty. The so called Easy Route stretches for about 5 miles and could take up to four hours to complete. There is a “Halfway” Cafe for a break on this trail should the need arise.

Famously the area around Snowdon was used by the British “Everest” Expedition in the 1950’s for training purposes, prior to their successful climb on the World’s highest mountain. Members of the Expedition hold a renewal and “get together” every five years, which lately includes wives and children; staying at the same hotel which was their base all those years ago.

Of course the easiest way to ascend Snowdon is by means of the Mountain Railway from Llanberis to the Summit. One or two members have taken this option, but having chosen the wrong day, have got to the top to be greeted by low cloud and even fog.

Following the presentation, society president, Jane Jones, reminded members of the outing on the first week in July, and stated invitations with more details would be sent out within the next few weeks.

She also stressed that having lost two stalwart members in the last 12 months, the society was in need of fresh blood, and that meetings are open to anyone who has an interest in Wales, its history, its geography, is people and its culture.

Meetings are held in English so a knowledge of the Mother Tongue is not essential.
