Loughborough Foxes see title race go to the wire

LOUGHBOROUGH FOXES face a make or break weekend knowing that their hopes of making an immediate return to the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division are hanging in the balance after a nightmare 10 days.

The side has been top of the Midlands Division One table since the start of the season but back to defeats has seen a healthy seven point lead disappear and now they have to rely on other results to secure the championship title ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers Women.

A 3-2 midweek defeat against Wolves was followed by a 3-1 defeat at the hands of midtable Radcliffe Olympic Ladies and although the Foxes are still top of the table, their lead has been cut to a solitary point and Wolves have a crucial game in hand which means that the Black Country side are now the favourites for promotion.

Last Sunday, the Foxes got back to winnings ways with a 5-2 win over The New Saints and must now ensure they win their final league game of the season this Sunday (May 14) when they travel away to face Sporting Khalsa and hope Wolves drop points in either their game in hand on Thursday (May 11) against a Loughborough Students side which hasn’t won a match all season or on Sunday when Wolves face Leicester City Ladies.

Loughborough Foxes’ director of football Steve Wilkinson said it would be a big blow if the club failed to win promotion after such a good season.

“To not win promotion would be a huge disappointment having been top since game one but we are now reliant on either Leicester Ladies or Loughborough Students taking points off Wolves.”
