Loughborough RFC Vets defend their county cup title

-

COUNTY CUP FINAL LOUGHBOROUGH RFC VETS 26 MELTON MOWBRAY VETS 15 LOUGHBOROUGH Vets made the short trip to Melton on Saturday for their third consecutive county cup final bidding for an unprecedented third win.

As ever backed by a well supported following, Loughborough kicked off up the hill and in to the wind, aiming to move the ball around as much as possible.

With strong early drives from captain Andrew York and Matt Page, Loughborough opened the scoring as Ben Keast snook through a gap and ran in from the twenty two. The conversion gave Loughborough an early 7-0 lead.

Melton struck back with an imposing drive but missed the conversion to trail 7-5.

Loughborough backs started to see more of the ball despite a misfiring set piece and were able to turn possession in to territory. The silky running of Ralph Coleman and Pete Shaw gave Loughborough great field position and a try from Ryan Brind extended Loughborough’s lead to 12-5 at the break.

After the break, Loughborough took control and scored two more converted tries through Aaron Brown to make the score 26-5 and although their defence was tested throughout the final quarter when they were redcued to 14 men, two late tries from Melton weren’t enough to deny Loughborough a third county cup in a 26-15 win.

After the game a very pleased Loughborough skipper Andrew York praised his teams efforts.

“It was a fantastic final played - our team spirit and bond as a group of mates was enough to see us record another great win.”
