HERITAGE CENTRE EVENT. A special event is being staged at Diseworth Heritage Centre later this year, on Wednesday June 27.

Those attending the event will be told of the story of Ann Ayre Hely, a Crimean War nurse born in the early 19th century in Ravenstone, Leicesters­hire.

After the death of her husband, she volunteere­d to become a nurse in Turkey during the Crimean War and the presentati­on will tell story but will also be of interest to anyone interested in the Crimean war and the history of medicine and hospitals.

Admsision to the event will be adults £5 and children free.

Dr Freer is Chair of Pudding Bag Production­s which produces local history short films, videos, trails and books.

The presentati­on will be by Dr Wendy Freer, author and local historian and her book on Ann Hely will be available for purchase.

WHATTON HOUSE CHARITY EVENT. The annual Charity event at Whatton House and Gardens in Long Whatton takes place on Sunday, May 21, from 11am to 5pm. Admission will be £4 and children will be free.

Tea, cakes and plants will be on sale and there is wheelchair access to the 15 acres of gardens. The event is part of the National gardens Open scheme.

Whatton House and Gardens are described as having a sense of serenity and charm that draws you in.

The house is the home of Lord and Lady Crawshaw.
