THE next meeting of the Leicestershire and Rutland Family History Society, Loughborough Group is on Tuesday, May 16, entitled: ‘ The Pentrich Revolution Bicentenary, 1817 - 2017’.
The story of the events which took place on June 9, 1817 is told by two members of the Bicentenary Committee, Roger Tanner and Sylvia Mason. Motivated by hunger and poverty, about 300 men from villages on the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire border gathered together to march to Nottingham to protest about the oppressive government of the time.
They were intercepted by soldiers and arrested. The leader was executed, some were imprisoned others were deported to Australia.
The Bicentenary Group are planning many events this year, both locally and in Australia, such as guided walks along the route taken by the men, exhibitions, conferences, etc to commemorate the men’s fight for universal suffrage and a just society.
