Shepshed’s food bank issues a plea for help replenishing stock

THE Shepshed Food Bank is urging residents to support the service by donating tinned, long-life and dried goods as it says stocks have been depleted due to an increase of people “in desperate need of help”.

For the past four years the food bank has been in operation and during that time the service is said to have seen a “fourfold increase” in the number of people using it.

A spokesperson from the Shepshed Food Bank told the Echo: “We are in fact now distributing more and more parcels every week with local agencies now referring peo- ple to us who are in desperate need of help.

“The food bank helps people of all ages and from all walks of life; single people, pensioners, couples and families - many of whom have young children.

“A total of 140 parcels are delivered every month.

“This means that we now have to buy extra food every week in order to replenish our ever depleting stock of food.

“We really are desperate for donations of tinned meat and fish, cereals, jars of pasta sauce, long-life milk and tins of spaghetti and tomatoes.”

There are various collection points around Shepshed. They are at: St Botolph’s Church, St Wine- fride’s Church, the Volunteer Bureau and the Glenmore Centre.

There is also a labelled basket in the Co-op in Shepshed and people can also hand in food donations to Asda’s customer services, then the food bank will collect the items.

The spokesperson said: “If anyone feels they can help, especially local businesses who could organise a food collection, then please contact Shepshed Food Bank on 07594639668 or e-mail shepshedfoodbank@gmail.com.”
