Is this Burdell’s old butcher’s?

-

LOOKING THROUGH the Echo archives reporter Liam Coleman found that a popular Loughborough butcher hung up his cleaver for the last time 25 years ago and now a Looking Back reader has sent in a photo of what he believes could have been a predecessor to the Churchgate shop.

According to an Echo article from 25 years ago Mr John Burdell retired as a butcher after working in his shop for 40 years in 1992.

Mr Burdell established his first pork shop in Churchgate, Loughborough in 1950 and soon had shops in the Market Place in Loughborough, High Street in Barrow-upon-Soar and Melton Mowbray.

Now regular Looking Back contributor Mike Jones got in touch and has sent in a photo of Carter and Son butchers at 62 Churchgate, which he believes could have been a predecessor to Mr Burdell’s shop.

Following Mr Burdell’s retirement, the shop was taken over by John Squires who had worked for Mr Burdell since 1961, who finished there in 2013.

Do you remember any of the Loughborough butchers?

Maybe you used to work in any of the shops or were you a regular customer?

Or maybe you worked in a different butchers in Loughborough and have some old photographs?
