Loughborough RFC to launch rugby league side
LOUGHBOROUGH RFC have unveiled exciting plans to launch a Rugby League side to play in the summer.
Now the club is appealing for players with rugby league experience interested in playing for the new team to get in touch ahead of the team entering The Midlands Rugby League Summer Merit table.
A club spokesman said matches will be played on Saturday afternoons starting on June 3.
“It is anticipated that a number of the current (union) playing membership may wish to take part in these games, and the club is looking to sign additional new players who have Rugby League experience.
“We hope some of the new signings will enjoy their time at Loughborough and decide to stay on and play Rugby Union from September onwards.”
A fixture list is being finalised but will include games against RAF Cosford, Buxton Bulls, Rutland Rabbitoes and Derby City.
Director of Rugby Leon Pohe has secured the services of Tim Farnden to coach the rugby league team. Farnden is an experienced coach who has coached at clubs including Leicester Storm and Coventry Bears and is currently a coach at Loughborough Univeristy and with England Students South.
Training sessions will be held at the club on Thursday evenings at 7pm with a trial match in the pipeline for Saturday (May 27).
A club spokesman said: “This initiative marks a new stage in the long history of Loughborough Rugby Football Club, one that we anticipate will add further success to the town’s sporting history and we anticipate that the sporting fans of Loughborough will come along and support this new area of sporting endeavour.
“Games being played during the summer will be open to all, with some of the games being members ‘family’ social days at the club with BBQs and bouncy castles, fun for children to enjoy whilst their fathers enjoy a different rugby experience.
