STUDIO FLAT WHERE ROCK ICONS RECORDED

- With Nigel Lewis

W essex Recording Studios is where some of the world’s most famous rock and roll albums were recorded, including 1979’s London Calling by the Clash, 1977’s Never Mind the Bollocks by the Sex Pistols and Ringo Starr’s 1970 debut solo album Sentimental Journey.

The studio is also where Queen recorded the single We Will Rock You, during which staff were asked to jump as one on the floor to help create its signature percussive backing track, and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Other bands and artists that have used the studio include the Rolling Stones, The Pretenders, Marianne Faithful, Slade, Pete Townsend, Kylie Minogue, REM, Coldplay, The Stone Roses and David Bowie, to pick out a few.

The building started out in 1881 as a church hall but was converted during the early 1960s into a recording studio and then in 1965 bought by Beatles producer George Martin.

He helped make Wessex Recording Studios one of the best facilities in the UK, second only to Abbey Road, and used it for more than 40 years before selling the property to developer Neptune in 2003, which converted it into nine apartments.

A two-bedroom flat within the gated complex, which is the North London area of Highbury, is currently for sale at £730,000.

It’s a first-floor flat with an open plan living area, two bathrooms and windows that feature the old church hall’s stone mullions in several of its rooms. More information is available from agent Hotblack Desiato on 0207 288 9696.
