Drink and drugs warning

MOTORISTS are being reminded of the dangers of driving while impaired through drink and/or drugs this summer.

With the arrival of the warmer weather and lighter nights Leicestershire Police is launching its summer drink and drug driving campaign which will see more patrols out on the streets. Checks will be made at random locations at any time of the day or night - early in the morning, at lunchtime or during the evening to make sure our roads are safe for everyone.

In 2016 an average of 65 drivers a month were arrested for drink drive offences, in addition a further 56 were arrested throughout last year for drug driving. These people were of all ages, both male and female and were arrested around the clock, across the police force area, in both urban and rural areas.

Jonathan Clarkson, Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Road Safety Partnership spokesperson, said: “Cracking down on those who get behind the wheel and are unfit to drive through drink or drugs is a year round commitment for Leicestershire Police. However, we are very aware the summer months can present opportunities where people are tempted to drive who are unfit to do so. We would advise drivers to plan ahead by leaving the car at home, sharing a taxi or taking public transport or alternatively nominating a designated driver who is fit to drive.”
