There will be stalls, rides, refreshments, games, activities and much more. Kids free entry, adults £1. Everybody welcome to come.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. A large number of members attended the meeting in June to listen to Gail Devereux Bachelor who had come to talk about “Scam Awareness”.

Gail runs an award winning company specialising in senior care in the home and also a leading scam awareness charity called “Think Jessica”.

In the course of running her business Gail had become aware of how vulnerable older people are to falling prey to scammers. In 2020 one quarter of the population will be over 65.

Why the elderly? Because cognitive function can decline with age, they are usually retired and more likely to be at home, their families move away and do not have as much contact with their parents, they cannot always keep up with the maintenance of their property, but money is the main reason.

Scammers see them as a supply of wealth which includes property, life savings and other assets. She told us the story of Jessica, who lived alone and was repeatedly tricked into sending cash and making money transfers to criminals over the space of five years.

Her family tried to make her understand but Jessica would not believe them, she thought the scammers were her friends.

The family could not do anything about it as Jessica had not been diagnosed with any sort of mental illness.

In the end, she fell out with her family. Jessica died, probably from all the stress, still waiting for her promised “prizes” and “large cash sums”.

Gail gave many tips on how to protect oneself from these scams and gave out “Senior Fraud Protection Toolkits” designed to help seniors stay safely at home.

She advised everyone to stay vigilant and “Think Jessica”. It was a most enlightening talk and sadly, most appropriate for our times.

The next meeting on 14th July will be a lighter occasion when afternoon tea of scones, jam and cream and strawberries will be served and entertainment provided by “Our Flossie”. WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN HISTORY GROUP? Would you like to join a Quorn Local History Group?

All our surrounding villages have local history groups and societies, but Quorn hasn’t!

Can you believe it! A good number of people have so far expressed enthusiasm for forming a group, which is brilliant!

The original intention was to get started in September, but we thought it would be a good idea to have a get together sooner rather than later, to share our ideas and to meet each other. Paul Goodman (parish council admin assistant) and Sue Templeman (Quorn Village On-line Museum), have set up a meeting for Monday evening, 26th June, 7pm - 8pm, in the Village Hall committee room. Please join us! It will be a very informal, initial, meeting of the group. We look forward to meeting you!

If you can’t make it, but are still interested, please let Paul know your contact details: adminassistant@quorndon.com ST BARTHOLOMEW’S.
