Nunnery conversion approved
A NUNNERY in Rearsby is set to be converted into eight homes and eight other properties are to be built in the grounds surrounding it.
The Charnwood Borough Council planning committee came to a unanimous decision on Tuesday, August 1 and approved proposals to transform the Sacred Heart Convent, of Station Road, Rearsby.
A document presented to the committee outlined proposals to vertically divide the building to create eight residential units and erect five detached houses, within the existing walled garden area, and three two bedroom bungalows.
It also proposed that the ‘conker field’ be retained as an area of open land and transferred to Rearsby Parish Council to maintain it as such.
Speaking on behalf of the applicant at the meeting, Kristian Lawrence said: “Everything has been carefully placed to minimise the impact of the gardens and that is reflected in the loss of only four trees.”
Anthea Byrne, representing the parish council, said: “We believe the development treats the heritage asset sympathetically. The parish council has worked with sisters and the architects and wish to compliment the development of this site.”
Ward councillor Coun James Poland said: “The sisters and the agents have been keen to engage with residents and take on board concerns. Such approach has been refreshing to say the least.”
Following councillors discussions, the application was given the go ahead and, as part of the planning conditions, it was agreed officers should look to put a protection order on the site’s trees.
