Noisy road working until 3am keeps resident awake

-

A LOUGHBOROUGH resident told the Echo noisy night time roadworks, which they said could be heard until 3am, caused a “health and safety” issue.

Mabello Yumang, of The Coneries, who works in airport security, told the Echo his sleep was disrupted so much last week by noise and vibrations from resurfacing work at the Baxter Gate/Sparrow Hill/The Coneries junction that he had to leave work.

Mr Yumang said: “I had not had enough sleep and because I work in security I can’t miss something going through the x-ray.

“It was taking place in the early hours of the morning, that was the annoying thing.”

Mr Yumang said he was aware roadworks were to take place at the junction but was not aware of the times work was to be carried out at.

He said: “If they [county council] had said roadworks are going to happen at The Coneries during the evening i would have said you can’t do that because people are sleeping.

“I hope this does not happen again, that’s the main thing. It destroyed the sleep pattern for residents in the area, it’s also a health and safety issue.”

A Leicestershire County Council spokesperson said the work, which started on Tuesday August 29, and finished on Friday, September 1, was needed as the junction was in a “poor condition”.

They said residents were made aware work would be taking place between 7pm and 6am and the works were carried out overnight so “not to disrupt commuters, businesses and the bus services.”

The spokesperson said: “We notified all local residents before the works were undertaken and of the times work was to take place.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
