Rothley Imperial make return to league action

ROTHLEY IMPERIAL are back in business and looking forward to life in the North Leicestershire Football League.

The club resigned from the Leicestershire Senior League in April 2016 after a turbulent season came to an abrupt end when they were unable to field a team for a league fixture.

Club secretary Scott Telfer had tried to keep the club afloat but the club ultimately folded just a few years after it had clinched back to back Senior League titles in 2012 and 2013.

Now the club has been accepted into the Premier Division of the Uptonsteel North Leicestershire Football League and played their first match of the new campaign on Saturday (September 2), a 4-2 win against Sutton Bonington.

Club secretary Scott Telfer said that supporters of the club had always hoped to get a senior team back into league football and discussions had been taking place since the beginning of the year to get things in place.

He said: “After the club left the Leicestershire Senior League, we took a year out to recharge the batteries, but we always wanted to get the the club back into competitive football.”

Now with the support of Rothley Sports and Community Club, which oversees Rothley Imperial’s successful junior teams, and a sponsorship deal with Ashby firm Digital Office Systems, everything is in place for the club’s new era.

Telfer will share the managerial duties with Nathan Morris and Emidio Chivetta, and with all three part of the successful title winning team of 2012/13, Telfer said they were looking forward to the new season.

“The first thing is to make sure we all enjoy our football again, but we all have a strong affinity to the club and are eager to bring the club success.

“We will be aiming to win promotion and in time, make our way back into the Leicestershire Senior League.”
