Another Iveshead Road crash

A COUPLE, whose car rolled with them and their four children inside after a collision at a notorious Shepshed junction, are on a mission to get it improved.

Jeff Campbell (54) and fiancé Natasha Guy (40), of West Sussex, told the Echo they believe if nothing is done about the Iveshead Road, Charley Road, and Abbey Road junction “there will be more accidents and fatalities”.

Mr Campbell told the Echo they were travelling with their children, whose ages range from nine to 13, to Barnsley on Friday, September 8 when a M1 diversion led them onto Charley Road.

At around 2.30pm the family, in a 4x4 Honda, and a Peugeot 206, coming from the left on Abbey Road, had a collision at the junction.

Mr Campbell told the Echo his car rolled one-and-a-half times, possibly twice, before landing on its side.

He said: “I don’t know exactly how many times we rolled because we were spinning.

“I had to kick the windshield out and I got us all out of the car and away.

“We thank our lucky stars we were able to walk away from it.”

Miss Guy told the Echo as well was wanting to thank the residents who helped at the scene, in particular a woman named Lisa and a care worker, she is to contact the county council to try and ensure accidents like this don’t happen again.

She said: “The sat nav did not give us clear enough indication that a junction divided the road and if people are not familiar with that particular junction and length of Charley Road, like us, they won’t know.

“The signage is not clear enough approaching the junction, there needs to be a visible stop sign in our opinion or a warning coming around that bend.”

Miss Guy also wants to stress how important it is that children have correct car seats and use seat belts.

A spokesperson from Leicestershire Police told the Echo officers were called to the collision and said those involved sustained “slight injuries”.

The Echo reported at the start of August that there had been seven collisions at the junction in the space of the month. Leicestershire County Council told the

Echo it has begun to make ‘improvements’ to the junction and so far road markings have been refreshed and additional signs have been put in.

Other works - which includes improving hazard perception bars (rumble strips) on Abbey Road and adding them on Charley Road, and reducing the speed limit to 50mph - are hoped to be completed by Friday (September 15).
