Receiving hate mail and death threats is appalling

- Frank Fay, Upper Green.

I AM writing to congratulate Nicky Morgan on her support for the amendment to give Parliament a meaningful vote on the UK’s withdrawal from the EU.

I disagree with Mrs Morgan on many issues but on this occasion she was, in my opinion, absolutely right. To hear that she and her similarly minded colleagues are being called traitors and are receiving hate mail and even death threats is appalling.

In our representative democracy MPs are elected not as delegates to do as they are told but as representatives to vote on legislation according to their judgement and conscience. If constituents don’t like the way their MP votes they have the opportunity at a General Election to dismiss him/her.

Whether you are a “leaver” or a “remainer” you want the best possible deal for the UK as we exit the EU. Such an important issue, which will affect us for generations to come, cannot be left to a small group of people who have fixed views on the issue. Their proposals should and must be scrutinised by Parliament which, in the English Constitution, is the Supreme Law Making Body.

Is this not what “taking back control” actually means? Mrs Morgan deserves great credit for maintaining her integrity and having the courage to vote against her own party, never an easy thing to do, and withstanding the threats and bullying tactics that were and continue to be used against her.

And, for those who are interested, check the voting records of Bernard Jenkin, Jacob Rees Mogg, Andrea Leadsome, Nadine Dorries et al. I don’t recall hearing anything about their being “traitors” let alone death threats when they voted against their own party.
