Sileby Swallows produce big cup upset with victory over Syston Fosseway
NEWLY promoted from Division 4 Sileby Swallows caused the biggest upset in the Loughborough & District Bowls League preliminary round of the Monday Trophy when they travelled to Division 1 Syston Fosseway.
With Fosseway winning the match on shots 58–48 and tied 4-4 on points the game went into an extra end where Swallows held their nerve and claimed their place in the next round where they will have home advantage against last seasons’ Trophy winners Shepshed Rams who had a resounding win against Division 4 Fosseway Romans 90-20 (8-0).
Not to be outdone by their higher level team Shepshed Lambs of Division 4 also caused an upset when they travelled to Division 2 opponents Birstall Sands and returned home victorious 51-44 (6-2) to move into the first round proper where they will again be away to Greenfields Badgers who beat St Margarets Maggies 63–38 (6-2). Greenfields other team, Foxes went down to Division 1 visitors Wymeswold Wolds 37–68 (0-8) handing a home tie on May 21 to Wolds who will host East Leake Willows following their emphatic 66-40 (8-0) win against Syston White Plum.
In the all Division 1 local derby, Queens Park Queens lost at home to Phoenix Pegasus 44–64 (1-7) the result giving Pegasus a home tie against Birstall Lighthouse who defeated Brush Peregrines at Nanpantan 65–37 (8-0).
Wymeswold Steamers of Division 4 entertained Division 3 opponents Rothley Crusaders and took the tie 54-41 (8-0) to earn themselves another home tie against Phoenix Kingfishers who travelled to Leicester to play Belgrave Ringers and returned home victorious 51-43 (6-2). Syston Green & Royals face a tough home game against Division 1 Thringstone Woodpeckers in round one following their 53-48 (6-2) win in a close game at Mountsorrel against Soar Valley Trent whilst the “Woodies” had a comfortable win at Soar Valley Tay (82-48 (8-0).
In the Thursday Evening League, Thringstone Rangers are the new leaders of Division 1 following their 68-55 (8-2) win at home against Syston Fosseway with Shepshed North close behind after their 81-67 (7-3) win at Brush Eagles. There was a close game at Wymeswold where the home side just took the spoils 69-64 (6-4) against New Lount Hares.
In Division 2 St Margarets Maggies had a comfortable win at home to newly promoted Phoenix Flyers 77-53 (8-2) whilst at Quorn the hosts Millers went down 64-73 (4-6) to Loughborough Greenfields but despite losing still remain on top of the table. There is no result to date from the game between East Leake Willows and Queens Park Carilloners who may find themselves losing points for failing to send them in on time.
Sileby Swifts are the runaway leaders in Division 3 with their third full house of points following their dynamic 94-40 (10-0) win at Shephed South. Kegworth move into second place after they became the first side this season to top 100 shots in a game when they defeated Soar Valley Valoars 47-112 (2-8) at Mounsorrel and there was also a big win for Rothley Knights in their local derby clash with Soar Valley, Knights taking the game 78-50 (10-0).
