ATC cadets on a Fri­day even­ing in Lough­bor­ough, Fe­bru­ary, 1943

THOMAS Toon of Sut­ton Bon­ing­ton has sent in a su­per pho­to­graph of young Lough­bor­ough ATC mem­bers.

Mr Toon wrote in say­ing: This is how lean and fit teenage youth of Lough­bor­ough and sur­round­ing district spent Fri­day even­ing dur­ing the early 1940s.

“They are cadets of Lough­bor­ough 132 Squadron Air Train­ing Corps (ATC) formed to pre­pare them for ser­vice in the RAF.

“They were granted the use of Lough­bor­ough Col­lege fa­cil­i­ties. Class­rooms for week­day even­ing in­struc­tion air­craft recog­ni­tion, nav­i­ga­tion and learn­ing the Morse Code.

“Fri­day a rig­or­ous ses­sion of PT in the col­lege gym­na­sium, a shower and a swim in the col­lege pool.

“This photo was taken dur­ing such a Fri­day even­ing in Fe­bru­ary 1943.

“Names re­mem­bered, Oliver, Mid­dle­ton, Brookes etc. Flight Lieu­tenant Mayoss who was in charge of the unit, in uni­form bot­tom left.” Can you name any­one? Ring Andy Rush at Look­ing Back on 01509 635802
