University Choir ‘in court’ to sing from the jury....
LOUGHBOROUGH University Choir will return to the stage for a concert that celebrates English music tonight (Wednesday).
This will be the group’s first performance at the university’s Cope Auditorium since the Christmas concert that saw the choir sing music from around the world.
The programme for the spring show includes Gilbert and Sullivan’s one act comic opera Trial by Jury and compositions from British favourites such as Ethel Smyth, Benjamin Britten and Henry Purcell.
Eleanor Graff-Baker, conductor of the choir, said: “Following the ‘musical world tour’ at Christmas, the Loughborough University Choir is staying firmly rooted in England for this concert.
“The performance of Gilbert & Sullivan’s ‘Trial by Jury’ will see the choir in court, as they sit on the jury or speculate from the press gallery.
“Will dastardly Edwin be fairly tried or will slighted Angelina see justice? Will the bewigged, if not bothered or bewildered, Judge bring all his experience to bear on this ‘nice dilemma’?
“Or will you, the audience, get to decide in this unique version of a very English favourite?”
For those who want to do more than listen, Loughborough University Choir is open to all university staff and students plus members of the public aged 16 and over.
New members are welcome to join for free at any time – no auditions or previous experience is required. The choir meets every Monday during term time to rehearse.
You can email luarts@lboro.ac.uk for more information on joining.
