Legend supports cancer group
Keeping in touch with cancer group
MUSIC legend Nile Rodgers is providing inspiration for people in the Loughborough area living with cancer.
The 65-year-old lead guitarist with Chic has been fighting his own battle against the disease after revealing on his website he was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer in October 2010.
Last December he told fans through his blog he had just had a lump on his right kidney removed.
Paula Reed, chair of the Cancer Self Help Group, Loughborough, told the Echo that she had approached Rodgers to ask him to become the patron of the group.
“He has been an inspiration to many people for the way he has refused to give in to his illness.
“Nile has continued to work very hard and not let cancer curb his lifestyle.
“The group emphasises the importance of a positive attitude and over the years there have been many examples of people who have lived far longer than they were told to expect.
“Nile was very helpful in his reply inviting six of us to his concert at Belvoir Castle which was brilliant.
“He asked me what we wanted from him and we have agreed it would be great for our members if he wrote to us occasionally to encourage us.
“I know this will mean a lot to members of our group.”
Paula and other group members met with Rodgers on the day of the open air concert and presented him with a bag sporting the name Cancer Self Help Group, Loughborough.
“He was very kind and welcoming to us and had us up on stage dancing with him. It was a brilliant experience,” she said.
The Cancer Self Help Group meets weekly at John Storer House in Loughborough on Mondays from 7pm.
