50 YEARS AGO Plans for sports centre in Brown’s Lane
A SITE in the Brown’s Lane area was proposed by Loughborough Town Council, for a multi-purpose sports centre.
But the plan would mean there be no room for Loughborough United FC based at the historic Brown’s Lane football ground.
The proposal include a hall with additional games rooms, facilities for four squash courts, small bore rifle shooting and archery, plus a social area.
Ken Barras serving in the Persian Gulf
ABLE Seaman Ken Barrass, aged 18, was serving on board HMS Appleton, a minesweeper stationed in the Persian Gulf.
Ken’s parents, Mr and Mrs Dereck Barrass lived at 57 Griggs Road, Shelthorpe.
Disco nights at The Hurst in Quorn
A DISC jockey and dancer were to be the first double acto to perform at the Hurst discotheque, Quorn.
Under the name of the 101 Octane Disc Show, the disc jockey Andy Bentley of 31 Kirkstone Drive, Loughborough and dancer Roy Jones from Leicester were due to present their double act every other Friday at the Hurst.
The first 20 girls at the Hurst were allowed in for nothing and discotheque manager explained: “This is to make sure we have an even number of men and women present.”

Mansfield’s Amos Winters retires
AFTER 51 years service with Mansfield Hosiery Mills Ltd and its predecessors Nottingham manufacturing Co. Ltd of Trinity Street, Loughborough, Mr Amos Winters retired, receiving the good wishes of his colleagues.
Mr Winters, of 73 Middleton Place Loughborough, entered the firm straight from Churchgate School in April 1917.
Girls at Clarence Street and staff at Trinity Street subscribed to present Mr Winters with a gold watch.
25 YEARS AGO Phil Mitchell opens computer shop
WITHOUT a hint of the women trouble that had haunted him lately in the hit BBC soap EastEnders, Steve McFaddon, alias Phil Mitchell, turned up in Loughborough to open the new computer shop, Miracle Micros, in Baxter Gate.
An enthusiastic 600-strong crowd waited around an hour to see their hero and there were screams when he turned up.
Choking on a cigarette lighter
ALL was well at Peggy’s Bar in Pinfold Gate, Loughborough until 10.45pm, when a woman rushed in wanting an ambulance for someone who was choking nearby.
Somehow he had managed to swallow a cigarette lighter Doorman Peter Joyce rushed to help. He told the
Echo: “I spun him round, put my hand round the middle of his stomach and started to administer abdominal thrusts.
“At first the lighter refused to budge, but my colleague held his head forward and we managed to get the lighter out of his mouth.”
