Creative times at Thorpe House
USUALLY you get a ‘normal’ job and then later if you are lucky enough to retire, you do what you’ve always wanted to do.
With me it was the other way around, I spent most of my working life being a puppeteer, a childhood passion that became my profession. But now I am an activities co-ordinator at Thorpe House Nursing Home, Loughborough and I can honestly say it’s one of the most enjoyable jobs I have ever done.
Job satisfaction is sky high. The residents are so receptive to creativity, it’s an absolute joy.
I work out ways of maximising participation so the residents really do take part. We have wheelbarrows and old tyres as raised beds so that they can get in and get their hands dirty, growing tomatoes and beans and even melons this year!
For the Royal Wedding we painted our own Union Jack and Stars and Stripes, using mini rollers to paint with making sure everyone can join in. Check out the American artist Jasper Johns, our inspiration for our flags, the resident’s art work was wonderful.
A street party was created in the main lounge with tables right down the centre, a hugely enjoyable occasion - one resident said; ‘He’s not much to look at’ about Prince Harry but everyone enjoys a good party!
Mind you we have to raise all of our activities budget so fund-raising is crucial.
Thorpe House Residents Association was formed last year and the volunteers are terrific.
The association were delighted that Mayor of Charnwood Coun Christine Harris came along to open our summer fayre which raised £757, a trip out on the Great Central Railway is our next big adventure.
We make sure Thorpe House is part of life’s journey and not simply the destination.
