Willoughby on the Wolds
DO YOU HAVE A STORY ABOUT THE GREAT WAR? Residents in three South Nottinghamshire village -Wysall, Widmerpool and Willoughby on the Wolds – are being asked if they have a story about the Great War.
The search for information is being made by Willoughby parish councillor Don Aldiss and editor of the monthly magazine that serves the three villages and aptly called The Three W’s, Dill Wakenarrow who say they feel there can be very few people in the three villages whose families were not touched in some way by the events of 1914 to 1918, one hundred years ago and more.
“Perhaps there are stories about that time in your family history that you would share with others – stories that reveal a little of what it was like to be at war on the Western Front or elsewhere, or to be living at home while relatives, friends and neighbours were engaged in armed conflict,” they say.
“Tales about people living in the 3Ws at the time will be of particular interest, but we feel that many people who have moved to the villages more recently can also tell illuminating stories that give general flavour of those war years, and their consequences.”
Anyone who has any such stories, or pictures, or memorabilia of other kinds, are being asked to consider making them known for them to become more widely known.
It is hoped there will be enough such material to create at least one local exhibition to mark the historic occasion of one hundred years since hostilities ceased at the end of the Great War.
