Multiple success for Loughborough rowers at Bewdley

-

WITH a total of 34 victory ‘pots’ collected from six winning boats and a turnout of 26 competing crew members, Loughborough Boat Club continued its stunning Summer success at a rainy Bewdley Regatta.

A tricky combination of gusty wind against a rising and choppy stream made a change to the recent smooth flat calm river conditions, and tested the rowers on their technique and persistence.

Highlights of the weekend were wins for three different combinations of Eights, in Womens, Womens Masters, and Mixed Masters categories. Success narrowly eluded the Open Masters Four in a thrilling race against Stourport with the lead changing several times along the course; the result was decided on the timing of the final stroke, which unfortunately gave Stourport victory by just one foot. However, a newly-formed Open Masters Quad comprising Andrew Martin, Scott Ferris, Jerry Heygate, and Nick Maker surprised everybody (including themselves) by taking an early lead against host club Bewdley, and maintaining the advantage to the line.

Masters sculler Mike Targett scored a notable victory in his single-scull against strong opposition from Minerva Bath, winning his first ever ‘pot’ in that category and confirming his increasing progress in that class. There was less success for the Junior rowers this time round, but some useful experience gained, as the club continues to turn out promising young crews.
