Crash with £2m worth of supercars
Transporter incident closed road for 10 hours
A TRANSPORTER, which was carrying £2m worth of sports cars, crashed into a tree and sent one of its prized cargo flying.
The crash, which involved brands such as Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Aston Martins, closed a road near Loughborough for more than 10 hours.
The incident happened on Loughborough Road in Burton on the Wolds when the HGV went through a field and smashed into a wall and trees. According to Leicestershire Live, the driver suffered minor injuries. However, there was a large diesel spill from the vehicles, which is why the road has been closed for a long period.
One of the trees is understood to have fallen and blocked the road.
Charnwood councillor Jonathan Morgan tweeted that the vehicle had been carrying valuable super- cars, and that one of the cars had been launched into a tree as a result of the impact.
Commenting on Twitter on Sunday morning, he said: “Loughborough Rd, Burton on the Wolds - fallen tree blocking road currently being cleared following freak midnight accident- car transporter with £2m of supercars on it, crashed and brought down tree - catapulted one of the cars 50ft up, to rest in branches.
He said: “We came across it just before midnight. The lorry had one off the road and through the perimeter wall of Prestwold Hall before hitting three or four pretty large trees.
“One of the supercars had been flung off and was dangling in the branches of one of the trees that had been brought down. It’s an odd thing to come across when you’re driving home on a Saturday night.”
He said there were about eight other cars still on the transporter but he suspected they will have been damaged, too.
He added: “When we got there the emergency services hadn’t arrived yet. The driver was out of the lorry and inspecting the cars still on the lorry. I think he was a bit bruised in the crash but I understand he didn’t go to hospital. The trees have all been cut up and taken away and the cars were also removed.”
The crash happened just after midnight on Saturday. Highways crews were at the scene throughout this morning and the road remained closed westbound at noon.
A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Police said: “We were called at 12.02am to a report that a lorry had gone through a field and into a wall, causing significant damage to trees.
“There was quite a lot of diesel on the road, which was why the road remained closed for so long.”
