50 YEARS AGO Plans for Garendon Social Club

AT A well attended meeting at Thorpe Acre Junior School it was decided to go ahead with plans for the erection of a social club to cater for the Ashby Road and Knightthor­pe areas of Loughborou­gh.

Many people paid an initial fee of 2s. 6d to get the scheme going and the proposed name of The Garendon Social Club found much favour at the meeting.

Praised by Princess Grace of Monaco

AN 1899 Decauville vintage car owned by Arthur Tyler of Outwoods Drive Loughborou­gh was praised by the Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco during the London to Brighton rally.

Fr the last 10miles of the rally the car was driven by Mr Tyler’s younger son Stuart, travelling only a few yards away from a De Dion Bouton carrying the Prince and his wife Princess Grace of Monaco (the movie star Grace Kelly).

Mr Tyler said that Stuart chatted to the Royal couple as he drove and the car was praised by the Prince and Princess.

Marilyn North wins WMC talent show

A 12-YEAR-OLD tap dancer and singer, Marilyn North won the first Loughborou­gh Working Men’s Club, junior talent competitio­n.

Singer Jacqueline Cornish, aged 10, came second and 13-year-old Rosemarie Mansfield, who presented a musical comedy and singing act came third.

More than 200 people were at the Baxter Gate Club to see the six finalists battle it out.

25 YEARS AGO Car dealer’s plans for Duke of York

LOCAL motor dealer, Trophy Cars in Nottingham Road had taken over nearby pub, The Duke of York.

But the company said that it had no intention of entering the licensing trade, but was converting it into offices to develop its expanding business.

The intention was to use the pub’s car park on the Nottingham Road and Ratcliffe Road junction as a second car show area.

Rev Cherry appointed new town rector

REV Stephen Cherry was announced as the new Rector of Loughborou­gh.

Mr Cherry, 36, was currently the chaplain of King’s College Cambridge.

A spokespers­on for the Parochial Church Council said that it was an exciting appointmen­t, particular­ly as a younger man was coming to the parish.
