Loughborough Echo - - SPORT -

BRIDGFORD 41 CHARNWOOD Rutland Warriors were held to a draw by Bridgford on Sunday after a thrilling game where the lead ebbed and flowed throughout the 60 minutes.

Both teams knew that they needed a win to help improve their position in the league table and avoid the relegation battle this season.

With this in mind both came out with intent from the first whistle. With both sets of shooters accurately sinking their shots and both defences working hard to turn over the ball Bridgford just edged it going into the first break 9-7 up.

A strong start to the second quarter saw the Warriors draw level as they began to click into gear with impressive throughcourt play and the teams couldn’t be separated at half time with the score 21-21.

With a few changes made at halftime the Warriors started the third quarter slowly and Bridgford were able to stretch out to a seven-goal lead.

However thanks to the constant work of their defence to turn over ball and calm accurate shooting the Warriors went on a brilliant run of nine unanswered goals to head into the final quarter 32-30 up and momentum on their side.

With both teams desperate to take the win the last 15 minutes was fast and frantic with every player on court giving it their all. The Warriors stretched out to a five-goal lead and the win was in sight however strong defensive pressure from Bridgford’s tall goal keeper began to rattle Charnwood’s attack as Bridgford slowly chipped away at their lead until the teams were level.

With just seconds remaining the Warriors were unable to get the ball into their shooters and the final whistle blew on a brilliant game of netball with the teams sharing the points with the final score 41-41.

Samantha Griffin, player head coach of the Charnwood Rutland Warriors netball team.
