A CHARITY has launched a new debt centre in Loughborough hoping to help people in financial trouble get a helping hand at the start of 2019.

Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is based at the New Life Community Church in De Montfort Close, Loughborough, and will officially launch the debt centre at a special service at the church on Sunday (January 13), after successful fund-raising in 2018 for the project.

Loughborough CAP Debt Centre Manager Johnny Abbott said: “We had to raise £3,500 for the first year. Myself and a friend did a bike ride to Skegness, another couple in church did a ‘Steam and Cream’ tea party in the summer, another lady ran a fermented foods make and take evening, others gave generously.

“We will continue to fund-raise for the coming years and we are hoping to get some grants for this work too.”

He said the charity had been forced to turn families away in the past because of the lack of a CAP debt centre.

“Christians Against Poverty is a debt charity, so we are hoping that the local council and Jobcentreplus will be willing to refer peo- ple to us.

“We offer home visits, and help clients to become debt free, by working out what their needs are and the expertese from CAP HQ in Bradford we are able to give them light at the end of a dark tunnel.

“Depending on the level of debt and each clients needs will determine what route out of debt will best suit them.

“We also offer friendship and the love of God, we are after all called Christians Against Poverty.”

The Debt centre will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays. To book an appointment call 0800 328 0006.
