Convincing home success for Leicester City Women
LEICESTER CITY WOMEN 4
LEWES FC 0 LEICESTER City Women got the new year underway with a convincing 4-0 win over Lewes FC Women, as goals from Melissa Johnson, Fiona Worts and Lucy Johnson secured a victory at Quorn FC’s Farley Way Stadium.
The Foxes played high pressing football against a Lewes side still adapting under new Manager Fran Alonso. Leicester City Women dominated the early stages and Jonathan Morgan’s side forced visiting ‘keeper Faye Baker into a number of early saves.
As the visitors grew into the game, Avilla Bergin saw an effort blocked on the edge of the area by Charlotte Greengrass before Rebecca Carter was played through on goal but her lobbed effort was well held by Demi Lambourne.
Freda Ayisi pulled most of the strings in the middle of the park for Leicester City and was at the heart of the first goal, picking up the ball inside the centre circle and setting off down the left flank before teeing the ball up for Melissa Johnson for a simple tap-in, four minutes before the break.
The game was over as a contest just 10 minutes into the second half as striker Fiona Worts grabbed a quickfire double with two well taken goals. The first came after some good work inside the area where Libby Smith saw her shot well blocked but the rebound fell kindly for Fiona Worts whose deflected shot looped over the goalkeeper and into the far corner.
Worts’ second goal came five minutes later as the Foxes worked the ball along the edge of the 18 yard box before Smith provided the perfect lay off for her strike partner to run onto
the ball and smash home.
Whilst Lewes came back into the game in the second half, City’s defence were equal to anything thrown at them as they went on to record only their third clean sheet of the season. Avilla
Bergin again went closest for the visitors late on as she saw an effort crash off the underside of the bar before being cleared to safety.
The moment of the game came just two minutes from time as Lucy Johnson
grabbed her first senior goal of her career, on her 17th birthday. The youngster finished off a perfectly timed through ball to rifle the ball home from just inside the area and net the perfect birthday present.
