50 YEARS AGO Juke Box Jury over Shadows and Ventures

THE Shadows and Ventures were set to come face to face later in the month when a panel of local disc jockeys were to have the difficult task of deciding which group was the best.

The meeting, in the form of a juke box jury was to take place at the Trinity methodist Youth centre.

Both groups were to be represented by a fan who had the job of selecting 10 tracks from their favourite artist’s albums. Each track was to be judged by the panel.

The idea came from Michael Menzies, of 103 Sharpley Road, Loughborough, who collected Ventures LPs.

He said: “People often compare the Shadows and the Ventures. I believe the American group are much better than the Shadows.”

His challenger, on the side of the Shadows, was James Anthony, of 64 St Mary’s Crescent, East Leake, who had several Shadows LPs.

James thought the Shadows were the best instrumental pop group in the world and was confident he would win the competition.

Entrance to the debate was 1s 6d and all of the door takings would be given to a town charity.
