Market Place’s JD Marsden closes

AFTER trading for many years in the Market Place, Loughborou­gh, as grocery and provision merchants, Messrs J D Marsden Ltd closed on Saturday.

A spokesman of the firm at Nottingham told an Echo reporter that the property had been sold. Marsden’s had many branches at Nottingham and were part of a big group with headquarte­rs in Newcastle.

Marsden’s was the fifth grocery store to be closed on one side of the market Place in recent years. The others were Melias, Maypole, Home and Colonial (all three of which were still empty) and Downs (now used as a store by Boots).

Sad news as the Mulberries call it a day

IT WAS sad occasion as Loughborou­gh’s most popular group, the Mulberries agreed to part and cancel all future bookings.

The break-up was a closely guarded secret and only a few people knew that their performanc­e at a children’s party in the hall of Metal Box Co Ltd, Leicester would be their last.

Rachel chosen as Miss Conservati­ve

MISS Rachel Carpenter, aged 17, of 63 Derby Road, Kegworth was chosen as Loughborou­gh’s Miss Conservati­ve.

Miss carpenter, a pupil at Long Eaton Grammar School would now represent the town at the Conservati­ves’ area ball in Nottingham. Five girls entered the competitio­n. The runner up was Miss Janet Newbon aged 24, of 33 Castledine Street Extension, Loughborou­gh. Third was Miss Judy Johnson, aged 21, of Prestwold Lane, Hoton.

The judges included Mr Frank Hammond of Kegworth Young Conservati­ves and Mike Wheway of Loughborou­gh Young Conservati­ves.

OX Lea starts its own football team

WHEN Shepshed’s newest pub, the Ox Lea selected a football team to meet the North West Leicesters­hire Water Board, the match ended with a 2-2 draw, customer of other licensed premises in the town sat up and took notice.

And now the Red Lion, in the Market Place, had challenged the Ox lea to a game, which was predicted could see the start of a host of inter-pub matches in Shepshed.

25 YEARS AGO Tribute to Harry Whelband

A FORMER footballer from Brush Sports’ famous FA Cup days passed away aged 72.

Harry Whelband wore the number seven shirt in the Brush Sports team which took on Shrewsbury and Southend in the Cup, and also played fro Morris’s and Shelthorpe.

He lived in Loughborou­gh all his life and was educated at Shakespear­e Street and Limehurst schools in the town.

He worked at the Brush as a wood machinist for more than 40 years. He later worked at Loughborou­gh Technical College doing maintenanc­e and joinery.

Paula Radcliffe beats Zola Budd

LOUGHBOROU­GH University student Paula Radcliffe saw the New Year in with a cracking result, winning the televised Internatio­nal Cross County Challenge at Beamish County Durham.

Radcliffe, who ran the five kilometres on New Year’s Day in 15 minutes and 37 seconds beat off strong field which included South Africa’s Zola Pietersee (formerly Budd) who came second.
