Annual photo competition

-

THE annual competition between members of Sileby Photographic Society took place on Monday, January 7, when it was the responsibility of visiting judge, Ralph Bennett, ARPS, CPAGB, to decide the winning entries submitted for each of the competition categories.

Ralph provided constructive and comprehensive comments for each of the categories, monochrome and colour prints and digital images and, with such a wide and diverse range of subjects together with a high volume of entries, judging was no easy task.

Despite stiff opposition in the Monochrome Print section, competition proved insufficiently strong to knock Mandy Sherrington off her perch. Her entries of ‘Hopeful’, ‘ The Sleeper’, and ‘St. Thomas â Becket Church’ were awarded first, second and third places respectively, and deservedly so.

Richard Storier beat all opposition with his stunning entry in the Colour Print section. ‘Devotion’ caught the judge’s eye, and was duly awarded first place. Kevin Blood’s affinity with the great outdoors resulted in his entries, ‘Greater Spotted Woodpecker’ and ‘Green Woodpecker’, achieving second and third places respectively.

On to the Digital Image section and it was good to see that one of the Society’s new members, Craig Francis, proved to be a force to be reckoned with. His entry ‘Milky Way at St. Michael’s Mount’ was justifiably awarded first place. Nigel Atkins’ image ‘Fox in Snow’ and Kevin Blood’s entry ‘Emerging from the Steam’ were awarded second and third places respectively.

All in all, this had been an excellent evening, showcasing the photographic expertise within the Society, and Ralph was thanked by Colin Machin, president, for his constructive comments and diligence in fulfilling his judging duties.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, January 21, when Mandy Sherrington and Colin Machin, long-standing and highly regarded members of SPS, will entertain with digital images under the title ‘Cuba’.

Visitors and prospective new members are always welcome to attend the meetings which commence at 7.45pm for 8pm and are held at Sileby Community Centre.
