Stage Left to perform Vagina Monologues
STAGE Left Theatre Workshop are preparing to perform the infamous Vagina Monologues as part of V-Day.
The award-winning play is based on V-Day founder/playwright Eve Ensler’s interviews with more than 200 women. With humour and grace the piece celebrates women’s sexuality and strength. Through this play and the liberation of this one word, countless women throughout the world have taken control of their bodies and their lives.
This year marks the 20th anniversary year of The Vagina Monologues and V-Day. The Vagina Monologues has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in public.
All the proceeds from the performances will go to Living Without Abuse (LWA) based in Loughborough.
Stage Left is led in this project by Lisa Wood. In her day job Lisa is a Detective Sergeant with Leicestershire police working in the safeguarding arena.
Many of the people affected by the crimes Lisa deals with will utilise the services of LWA so this is a charity of huge importance to the whole group and they want to raise as much money as possible.
The performance promises to be laugh-out-loud funny as well as very poignant - you will without doubt leave having learnt something and with your sides aching from laughing.
Stage Left are also supporting a group in Bradford and travelling there every weekend to rehearse. The group in Bradford - Surviving Sistas - are survivors of domestic abuse.
They have taken on the challenge to undertake this amazing performance to raise money for Keighley DVS (domestic violence service) who supported them to survive. Their performances are at the Kala Sangam Arts centre in Bradford.
Lisa said: “To be involved in this project has been very humbling. I feel very honoured and proud to be part of two amazing groups of women raising awareness and money for two causes which will go on to support people at their most vulnerable.”
The Loughborough performances will take place at Fearon Hall’s upstairs ballroom in Rectory Road on Thursday, February 28; Friday, March 1; and Saturday, March 2, at 7.30pm.
Tickets, priced £7, are available from the website. Any tickets purchased on the website will be held at the box office for collection on the night of performance.
