Chinese New Year celebrations

-

LOUGHBOROUGH Students’ Landscaping and Gardening Society (LAGS) has celebrated the Chinese New Year of the Pig in great style.

The colourful annual event, held at the society’s allotment on the university campus, was attended by a number of Chinese students, who joined the regular LAGS volunteers, in having a thoroughly enjoyable time.

The allotment garden shed was decorated inside and out with traditional decorations and lights and looked particularly lovely, set against the dark evening with snow falling outside.

Students Laila and Ellen not only made many of the traditional red decorations, but also provided veggie and meat dumplings which proved to be very popular. Fellow student Yang brought along an impressive “Super Hero” decoration and even gave a short talk on the history of the hero.

LAGS co-ordinator, Martha Worsching, built a very welcome fire to ward off the cold and said: “It was a lovely occasion and was enjoyed by all those who attended.

“We even managed to find time to cover some of our raised beds with cardboard, to suppress the weeds ready for next season’s Loughborough in Bloom planting.”

Martha also added that any interested member of the local community would be welcomed at the allotment as a new volunteer, any Friday afternoon from 2pm until around 6pm.
