Meet me on the corner of Stubbs car showroom

-

STUBBS’ car showroom and Geoff Toys were on the minds of Looking Back readers after we published the old drawing of the prominent building in the town.

Tony Muddimer emailed to identify the picture saying: “I believe the photo was the garage and showroom of Stubbs Garage, Austin car dealership. I remember it from the 1950s. It is sited on the corner of Woodgate and High Street, currently unoccupied but was latterly a toy shop.”

Another regular reader Bob Parnell recognized the “showroom that was Stubbs car show room corner of Woodgate and Leicester Road. Their workshop was on the corner of Beeches road where the BP petrol station is.”

And of course Mike Jones wasn’t far away and, as usual, sent in some great photos to accompany his thoughts: “Obviously most of your Loughborough readers will have recognised the former Geoff’s Toys building at 20 High Street, previously occupied for many years by the Alliance & Leicester Building Society.

“I also attach a much older photograph of part of the building, showing a garage on the corner and the name Hydebain Foxon above the frontage adjacent closer to the then Kings Head Hotel.

“There is also a Lounge Cafe sign suggesting that the building had several occupants at that time.”

Dave Dunkerley was next up to correctly name the site saying: “It is situated at the corner of High Street and Woodgate. Latterly, it was occupied by Geoff’s Toys and before that, Alliance & Leicester Building Society.

“To its right, the building is about to be transformed into The King’s Head.”

Laurence Barry Kidger of Loughborough also came in to share an old advert for Stubbs’ garage, taken from an old road map book after he also recognised the site.
