Normanton on Soar

-

CHURCH FÊTE - Do come along to the Church Fête in the beautiful grounds of St James’ Church on Saturday 14th September, from 2pm to 4pm, on the banks of the River Soar.

We provide a large selection of stalls and games, boat trips on the river, tea in the church, barbeque etc; and those over 18 will be able to buy a glass of Pimms, with a nonalcoholic version available for children/young people and for those driving.

During the afternoon, Ken Godfrey’s Central Jazz Band will be entertaining us and to give the jazz band a break, Normanton-on-Soar Village Choir will be singing a few songs.

All proceeds will go towards our proposal to build a small extension to house a toilet and kitchen facilities at the church. Donations for the Raffle and Tombola are much needed and may be taken to The Willows, Butt Lane or to the Village Shop in the month before the Fête.

Items for the White Elephant stall and other stalls (cakes, books, plants etc) may be brought to the Church on the Saturday morning.

The fête will be opened at 2pm. We look forward to seeing you there! Please note that the Fête appears to be a little later in the month this year but it is our usual second Saturday in September!

CHAIN FERRY - The historic chain ferry in Normanton on Soar is open on Saturdays and Sundays 10am – 4pm until the end of September. The cost to cross the river is £1 per person and 50p per bike/dog.

If you haven’t experienced this unusual trip why not plan a walk involving a crossing of the river.

Access to the ferry is signposted as you approach the village from the direction of Stanford on Soar.

The ferry is operated by volunteers and new recruits are always welcome.

LUNCH CLUB - Remember ladies and gentlemen that a lunch club is held at the village hall in Sutton Bonington the second Thursday of each month. Upcoming dates include 12th September, 10th October, 14th November.

All seniors are welcome or if you have retired early and want to join us please do. Cost is £3 for our two course meal and this includes tea or coffee from 11.30am with lunch being served at midday. For more details, ring Sue James (673460)

Why don’t you also try making this easy and delicious dessert, which was enjoyed over the summer by our diners.

Lemon Surprise, 1 tin condensed milk, half pint double cream, juice and zest of two lemons, 6oz crushed digestive biscuits, 3oz melted butter.

Mix biscuit crumbs and melted butter, press into loose bottom tin to form base. Beat the cream until it becomes thick and add milk and lemon zest and juice. Beat to combine and pour into base before leaving in the fridge to set.

HARVEST FESTIVAL AND HARVEST SUPPER - As a rural community, it is good to celebrate Harvest Festival – to give thanks for all that is produced and to acknowledge all the hard work done by our local farmers during the year.

All are welcome to come along on Sunday 6th October, at 5pm in St James Church for our Harvest Festival Service at which we will be joined by Normanton on Soar Village Choir.

After the service, the congregation is invited to stay for the Harvest Supper which will be served in the church.
