Siblings design new sign for Dishley

SIBLINGS Isla and Zachary Beresford, aged 8 and 6, both pupils at Stonebow Primary School, Loughborough, have won a competition run by local councillors to design a new sign for Dishley.

Coun Emma Ward said: “The idea came about when Coun Keith Harris and I held a community surgery at Gorse Covert Community Centre.

“One of our local residents asked what the correct name for the area was, Gorse Covert or Dishley, as she was unsure. We told her that Gorse Covert is the name of the wood, whilst Dishley is the name of the area.

“It was suggested that we got another sign produced for this part of Dishley, like the one featuring Robert Bakewell, near Derby Road.

“Since children from Robert Bakewell Primary school were involved in making that sign a few years ago, we thought it would be nice if children from Stonebow Primary School were involved in designing this one.”

More than 40 designs were submitted by pupils, making it very difficult to choose.

Coun Keith Harris said, “We were very impressed with the standard and number of entries, but Isla and Zachary’s design stood out as it contained so many elements that are representative of Dishley, like the Stonebow Bridge, and the swans that nest nearby, for example.”

The sign will be produced and put up in the new year, and as part of their prize, Isla and Zachary will be able to take part in the production process.
