Take precautions with your health
ASTHMA attacks and other respiratory problems can become more prevalent and severe during the winter months, so NHS organisations in Leicestershire are recommending people with such problems take the necessary steps to prevent symptoms from worsening as temperatures plummet.
Anna Murphy, consultant pharmacist at University Hospitals Leicester, said: “Asthma and other respiratory symptoms can become worse in winter because cold air causes your airway to spasm. It is important that people with asthma and other respiratory conditions are aware of this and are always prepared to deal with worse symptoms in cold conditions.”
Inhalers prescribed for patients with asthma and other respiratory conditions are effective at delivering medication directly to the lungs.
As well as issuing advice on how to avoid the cold weather making asthma worse, health officials are also warning of the link between asthma attacks and colds and flu viruses, which can increase inflammation in the airways, causing people to cough and wheeze for breath.
Professor Fahad Rizvi, Clinical GP Lead for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, said: “If you have asthma, you should do everything you can to avoid getting sick as colds and the flu can cause your asthma to get worse.
“Getting your flu vaccination is the best way to prevent yourself from falling ill and making your asthma symptoms worse. Many people with long term conditions such as asthma are eligible for a free vaccination. Speak to your GP or local community pharmacist today about getting the flu jab.”
