RESIDENTS of Barrow-upon -Soar will be celebrating to hear the news that they are getting a new village post office.

It is more than a year since the last post office closed, and many villagers have been calling for it to be replaced.

But now a Post Office spokesperson told the Echo that the service was set to be restored at Barrow Filling Station, North Street, in February.

The spokesperson said: “The previous branch at The Papershop, High Street, closed temporarily in August 2018, due to the resignation of the postmaster and the withdrawal of the premises, which we do not own, for post office use.”

The new office is due to open on Wednesday, February 26, at 1pm.

Mat Wilkes, Post Office change manager, added: “We are delighted to be restoring post office service to Barrow-upon-Soar.

“We are making it easier for customers to get their cash, send and collect their mail and do their banking because we know how important these services are to local residents.

“We are confident that this vibrant new-style post office at the heart of the local community will meet customer needs.

“We are keen to restore services to this community as soon as possible, so we have decided to go ahead with our plans. However, the Post Office is now inviting customers and interested parties to give their comments on the plan and we are looking for feedback about accessibility, local community issues and anything that we can do to make life easier for our customers.”

The community engagement will close on January 15, 2020.
