£27,000 in grants for community groups

COMMUNITY groups in Charnwood have been awarded over £27,000 to support local projects in the latest Charnwood Grants rounds.

Charnwood Borough Council has awarded funding to a number of community groups in the latest round of grant funding applicatio­ns.

Go-Getta CIC was awarded £10,000 to continue its activities for the youth community in Loughborou­gh including a weekly youth club and an outreach project at Charnwood College.

Shelthorpe Community Associatio­n has received £7,000 towards ‘The Indoor Gardener’ project which will encourage and inspire the local community to grow food and learn about its different uses.

The Loughborou­gh Leggo Youth Group which provides a range of support for young people with special needs was awarded up to £5,400 towards its activities and projects.

Transition Loughborou­gh was awarded up to £5,000 towards a series of workshops which will raise awareness of climate change and how to reduce carbon emissions, on an individual, community and organisati­onal basis.

Caroline Harmon, a member of Transition Loughborou­gh said: “We were pleased to find out we had been awarded funding towards the Climate Literate Charnwood project.

“It will deliver four carbon literacy workshops to residents and community groups to help them improve their understand­ing of climate change and steps they can take to help reduce their carbon footprint.

“We’re still finalising a few details but are looking forward to welcoming the local community to the workshops later this year.”

Coun Deborah Taylor, the borough Council’s lead member for communitie­s said: “There has been a wide range of applicatio­ns during this round of funding and I’m pleased we’ve been able to support a variety of projects. These groups and organisati­ons offer a range of activities to help support our residents and local community.

“There’s a number of grants on offer and I’d encourage any groups in Charnwood which need financial support to take a look and consider applying in the future.”

Member Grants, deadline – February 28, 2020: Member grants give organisati­ons running projects that bring benefits to their ward a chance to apply to their local councillor for funding. Each borough councillor has been allocated an annual budget of £1,000 which can be used to support projects that bring benefits to their ward. Applicatio­ns can be made for a minimum of £250 per member, and up to a maximum of £1,000 per member.
