Photo journey to Hong Kong

-

SILEBY Photographic Society held its usual Monday evening meeting on Monday, January 20, when visiting guest lecturer, Sue Hutton, ARPS, presented digital images under the title “A Hong Kong Journey”.

Sue had visited Hong Kong and the New Territories in 2017 travelling with a small group of people, to experience the sights and sounds of the City life that this part of the world has to offer. Hong Kong today is not as economically wealthy as it once was and this was evident from some of Sue’s projected images which reflected today’s basic living conditions for many.

High-rise flats and narrow alleys with air conditioning units seemingly balanced on outside balconies, together with the day’s laundry hanging likewise, appeared to be the norm for many, with many of the residents’ income derived from daily market trading in the surrounding busy streets.

Hong Kong Island and Kowloon and its waterfront, particularly at night, provided good material for the camera lens. Images of the area and its many skyscraper buildings, together with the impressive Jardine House, the tallest, with its many windows apparently representing port-holes, were great to view.

Probably more impressive were Sue’s images of the 431 steps to the 10000 Buddha Monastery, lined with gold covered statues, each of which differed in design, and an obvious throw-back to a more opulent era. The Monastery was also home to the One Thousand Hand Buddha, and other incredibly beautiful artefacts, including unique pagodas and temples.

Street markets seemed to be everywhere, offering employment to many, men and women alike, and selling anything and everything from a pin to a piano. Colourful fruit and vegetables, fish, poultry and meat, together with clothing, jewellery and accessory stalls, offered great photographic opportunities.

Sue was thanked by John Hoogerwerf, Vice President, for giving her own personal interpretation on her trip to Hong Kong which had been well received.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, 3rd February which will comprise the Society’s internal competition, the ”Digital Image Knockout” when the visiting judge on this occasion will be Vin Scothern, DPAGB, AFIAP, EFIAP/b,BPE5*.

Visitors and prospective new members are always welcome to attend the Society’s meetings which commence at 7.45pm for 8pm and are held at Sileby Community Centre. Further information can be obtained from the Society’s website, www.silebyps.org.uk
