Refuse refusal to go down lane

- ANDY RUSH andy.rush@reachplc.com

RESIDENTS living down Moor Lane, Loughborough have expressed frustration after being told that bin lorries will not go to their homes to pick up their rubbish, because of the poor state of their road.

Moor Lane, just off Empress Road, which is littered with pot holes, runs over the canal, passes by Carillon Cricket Club and onto a number of properties including farms.

One resident contacted the Echo to say that Charnwood Borough Council was refusing to pick up their rubbish and recycling because of the problem road and said the decision had been made without consultation.

She added that Leicestershire County Council had repaired the road in the past and couldn’t see why the authority couldn’t do it again.

Another resident, Caroline Richardson, of Moors Farm, said that the borough had told her that it would only pick up the refuse and recycling at a special point on the road, which could be accessed without risking damage to the vehicles.

But she said that when the due date arrived for the pick up last week, the council hadn’t turned up.

A Charnwood Borough Council spokesperson told the Echo: “Our refuse vehicles are currently unable to access part of Moor Lane due to the poor condition of the road.

“Following a slight delay, alternative arrangements have now been put in place to collect recycling and refuse from the properties we cannot reach. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused and are resolving any further issues with residents directly.

“We have reported the issues with the road to Leicestershire County Council. If the roads are improved, we will review the current situation with the collection service to the affected properties in Moor Lane.”

The Echo also contacted Leicestershire County Council and a spokesperson said: “We are aware of the concerns from residents about the road conditions in Moor Lane, Loughborough.

“The first part of Moor Lane, up to the canal, is maintained by the authority including for vehicles. However, the remainder of the route after the bridge is classed as a byway, which means we are not required to provide a surface for vehicles.

“We hope the waste collection issue is resolved, but it would be a matter for Charnwood Borough Council where they require bins to be left for collection.”
